As we close out the summer term and quickly close in on the start of the fall semester, we are extremely fortunate to have our next guest with us. This guest is someone who needs absolutely no introduction – please welcome Ashton Henderson to our podcast. For the two of you out there who haven’t met him, Ashton is an Associate Director of Football Advising and the Coordinator for the Seminole Leadership Program for THE Florida State University. Ashton Henderson was named the Associate Director of Football Advising in August of 2016.
He rejoined the Florida State University Athletic Department in January 2015 as an Senior Academic Advisor/Student-Athlete Development Coordinator. Henderson previously served as an Academic Advisor for the football and track & field teams at Florida State University during the 2012-2013 academic years for Student-Athlete Academic Services.
Henderson served as an Associate Director of Football Academic Services at Clemson. He worked with the offensive side of the ball from (2013-2015). Henderson also served on various diversity committees and worked closely with campus stakeholders, to ensure the university was inclusive for everyone. While he was a Graduate Assistant at Michigan State University, he developed and administered a freshman mentoring program for football players called “Keeping It Real Mondays.” This program was designed to help freshmen football players get acclimated to college as well as teach essential life skills.
A native of Tallahassee, Florida, Henderson received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Advertising from Michigan State University in 2010. He was a four year letterman playing cornerback for the Michigan State football team. Henderson returned a blocked punt 33 yards for a touchdown vs. Northwestern to help fuel the greatest comeback in NCAA Division I-A history as the Spartans rallied from a 35 point deficit for a 41-38 victory in 2006. In 2012 he earned his Master’s degree in Public Relations from Michigan State University.
Ashton is married to Attorney Jasmyne Henderson and currently serves as the acting chair of the Ethic Concerns Committee for the National Association for Athletic Academic Advisors (N4A). Henderson is an active member of Bethel AME Church in Tallahassee.

Mark Trumbo serves as Coordinator of Student-Athlete Engagement and oversees The S-Project student-athlete development program. He joined the athletics department staff in August 2013.
In June 2016, Trumbo launched The S-Project. This unique, comprehensive program was designed to equip Syracuse student-athletes with the skills and knowledge to have a successful career at Syracuse University and beyond. This outcome-based life skills program will focus on four areas including, career readiness, financial education, healthy relationships and wellness, and personal development. The program partners with various campus resources and leverages opportunities available to all Syracuse students. Programming is specifically designed to engage student-athletes in all stages of their Syracuse career.
Trumbo also advises the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), comprised of student-athlete representatives from all 20 varsity sports. The SAAC has earned the ‘One University Award’ recognizing the top student organization on campus. The group is heavily involved in community outreach and discussing opportunities to improve the quality of life for student-athletes at Syracuse.
In 2017, Trumbo was awarded the John Maxwell Transformational Leader Top 100 Award. This national award recognized leaders across all industries making a significant impact in their community and leadership initiatives and was named to Central New York’s “40 Under Forty” list, which recognizes local professionals under the age of 40 who exemplify leadership through their business accomplishments and community involvement.
Prior to becoming Student-Athlete Engagement Coordinator, Trumbo was the academic coordinator for men’s and women’s soccer and cross country/track and field.
Trumbo is an active committee member on the ACC Student-Athlete Welfare Committee and Life Skills Metrics Working Group.
Prior to joining the Orange Trumbo worked at Ball State University where he held a similar position for more than four years. In his time at Ball State he provided academic service to more than 450 student-athletes. Trumbo created the SASS Choice Award for upperclassmen male and female student-athletes who demonstrated a high interest in academic achievement. In addition, he started the TAKE FLIGHT student-athlete development program, which focused on leadership, career and personal development.
Trumbo is a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletes (N4A). Trumbo served as chair for the Research Committee from 2014-2015.
Previously, Trumbo served as the head golf coach at Burris Laboratory School in Muncie, Ind. and as an intern for the Erie SeaWolves.
Trumbo earned a bachelor’s degree in personal finance and real estate from Clarion University and a Master’s degree in physical education sports management with a concentration in higher education from Ball State.
Trumbo lives in Liverpool, N.Y. with his wife, Kristy, and their children Avery and Grant.

John founded Forward Progress in 2013 after serving as Director of Academic and Membership Affairs (AMA) at the NCAA national office, where he oversaw various academic and compliance-related programs. This included the creation and oversight of the in-person academics hearing process, Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data and data reviews.
Over his time in AMA, John also served as liaison to the DI Committee on Academic Performance, providing leadership in NCAA academic policy decision-making. He also oversaw the Initial-Eligibility, Progress-toward-Degree and Two-Four Transfer Waiver processes, managing staff charged with analyzing and deciding nearly 1,000 cases per year.
Prior to his time in AMA, John served as an investigator within the NCAA enforcement department. In this capacity, he worked closely with institutional representatives and NCAA staff to develop and investigate information related to violations of NCAA legislation.
Before joining the NCAA, John was employed as an attorney at Bingham McCutchen LLP in Boston. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Sports Law at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI), and Metropolitan State University of Denver.
John is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, and received his M.S. in Sports Management from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College, where he graduated cum laude with a double major in History and Spanish, and was a four-year football student-athlete. In 2016, John was inducted into the Northwest Catholic High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
John is actively involved in his community, serving as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Special Olympics Colorado and of the Metropolitan State University of Denver Sport Management Department Advisory Board.
When I started this Podcast, the intent was to put forward those in Higher Education that could provide a resource for our N4A, NACADA and NACDA membership. It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to our next guest, President-Elect for N4A, Denise Poole. You can listen to her interview here:
Denise Poole was promoted to Program Director, Academic Services and Compliance Officer in April 2016. She became New York University’s Manager of Academic Services and Compliance Officer in 2014 following five years as Coordinator of Academic Services and Compliance Officer and three years as Academic Affairs Advisor.
Poole manages the Academic Affairs Office (AAO) staff, which is comprised of two full-time staff members, two part-time graduate assistants and four undergraduate student employees. She is responsible for ensuring the fruition of the AAO’s mission: “to provide an opportunity for students to simultaneously excel academically and participate in intercollegiate varsity athletics.”
The Academic Affairs Office supports the NYU Athletic Department’s administration, coaches and varsity student-athletes in four primary areas, admissions/recruitment, eligibility compliance, academic support services, and student-athlete development programming. The AAO also collaborates closely with the NYU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) to provide and promote student-athlete community service and a variety of development workshop opportunities. Additionally, Poole serves as a co-advisor to this group.
Poole is an active member of the NYU community, participating regularly as a member of the Undergraduate Advising Deans group and the NYU Community of Practice Advising Network. She has also assisted with NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai Admissions efforts.
A longtime member of the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A), an affiliate of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Poole joined the strategic planning committee in 2008 and was named the committee’s chair-elect in 2010 and served as chair from 2012-14. She has also served as a faculty member for N4A’s Professional Development Institute (PDI) – leader/manager track since 2012, helping prepare leaders in student-athlete support services throughout the country.
Poole is currently leading the N4A Strategic Planning ad-hoc group after serving as the Division Director for Professional Development from 2014-16. She also currently participates on the Academic Integrity Assessment/Program Review Advisory Board and the Mission/Vision Task Force and hosted the Region 1 conference at NYU’s Palladium Athletic Facility last October. In June 2017, Poole received the N4A’s Distinguished Service Award which is presented annually to “an Association member whom, in addition to having maintained continuous membership for at least the past five years, has served in N4A leadership positions at the regional or national level and whose contributions are recognized as being above and beyond the normal service required by those positions of leadership. “
Poole has served in similar roles at several other distinguished institutions. At Drexel University, she held the position of Program Manager for the LeBow College of Business and was responsible for providing a wide range of student service functions for all LeBow MBA students. Poole also held the title of Academic Coach/Consultant for Drexel’s ACHIEVE Center for Student-Athletes, where she coached student-athletes on priorities, time management, test taking, and study techniques.
Prior to her stint at Drexel, Poole was Academic Advisor and Student-Athlete Mentor at Northeastern University. She also served as an assistant coach of the Huskies’ men’s and women’s track & field and cross country teams.
Poole, who earned her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from St. Joseph’s (PA) University in 2002, was a captain and four-year member of the Hawks’ cross country and track & field teams (THWND). She went on to earn a master’s degree in applied educational psychology with a concentration in college student development and counseling from Northeastern in 2004.

Katie Christensen joined the University of South Carolina academic services unit as an academic advisor for football in October 2016. Christensen, a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics, came to South Carolina after a 3.5-year-long stint as an academic counselor for football at the University of Illinois.
A native of Lakeview, Mich., Christensen earned her bachelor’s degree in sport studies & psychology from Central Michigan University, where she also obtained a master’s in sport administration. During her time as a Chippewa, Christensen competed as a member of the track and field team, throwing the weight and the discus while serving as a team captain for two years.
For the first time in our brief podcast history, we are moving to the field of NCAA Athletics Compliance. Hank Harrawood has extensive experience in athletics compliance. Here, he speaks to the culture of compliance at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, as well as pending bylaws that could have major impacts at your university.

Hank Harrawood serves as the Director of Compliance for the 49ers helping oversee eligibility, recruiting, travel, and other aspects of the compliance program. He began his tenure in Charlotte in July of 2015.
Hank graduated from East Carolina University in 2007 and received his law degree from the Elon University School of Law in 2012. He is a member of the North Carolina State Bar and the American Bar Association.
Prior to Hank’s arrival at Charlotte, he served as Associate Athletic Director/Compliance at Florida International University in Miami during the 2014 and 2015 years. Prior to that Hank served as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Hank began his career at Gardner-Webb University where he served as the Compliance Coordinator.
Hank and his wife Tara currently reside in Belmont, North Carolina.
